We reached out to David to ask him eight questions that peel back the layers of his journey and the vision behind his feed. What he shared is well worth the read.
1. What first sparked your interest in rugged style—was it a person, a picture, or a specific piece of clothing?
When I was in college in the early 1990s, I did construction work with my father to help pay for school. I wore Red Wing boots on the job, and ever since, they’ve held a special place in my heart. From there, my taste evolved toward ethically sourced, well-made, high-quality heritage and rugged workwear.
2. How do you personally define rugged style?
I really love small-batch, unique pieces—handcrafted the old-fashioned way, with high quality and built to age beautifully. Ideally, they’re even worthy of being passed down through generations. For something to age well and truly last, it has to be made with exceptional quality. That’s what defines heritage and rugged style for me—all the elements that make up the perfect rugged wardrobe.
3. What’s one rugged style essential you swear by and why?
This is such a tough choice. For clothing, I’d go with denim or canvas work pants—something durable with plenty of functional pockets. When it comes to leather, it has to be a pair of rugged boots—specifically, Pacific Northwest–style work boots. Frank’s Boots would be my pick.
That’s a great question. If there’s one thought I’d hope they walk away with, it’s this: every piece is high quality and built to develop character over time—something far more meaningful and beautiful than fast fashion or anything freshly pulled off the shelf.

5. What’s one rugged piece you never travel without, and why?
It kind of depends on the weather. In colder conditions, it’s definitely all about a solid jacket and sturdy boots. In warmer weather, you might skip the jacket, but I’d still go with a denim or canvas shirt—just in case it cools down or starts to rain.
6. What’s the one underrated brand more guys should know about?
I’m glad you asked! It really depends on the region. In Japan, I’d go with Trophy Clothing—their attention to detail is amazing, and their garments rival top-tier Japanese makers but at a more accessible price point. In Europe, I’d choose Blue Blanket Jeans for their unique styles and quality pieces. And in the U.S., I have to go with Heritage Quality Goods—my own brand, of course!
7. What’s the best first piece for someone new to rugged style?
In my opinion, a pair of quality stitchdown or Goodyear-welted leather boots is essential. If you choose the right design for your needs, you’ll end up wearing them more than any other garment. That makes them the best bang for your buck—high-quality boots offer durability, versatility, and unmatched longevity.
8. What’s the piece of content you’re most proud of?
I’ve been creating content for over 10 years now, so it’s really hard to pick just one favorite. But if I had to choose, it would probably be one of the many outdoor photos I’ve taken in the fall. It’s hands down my favorite season.
